Four worksheets aimed at learning how to accurately punctuate direct speech. The worksheets are differentiated to cover a range of difficulty levels. The speech punctuation used includes inverted commas (speech marks), capital letters, commas and end of sentence punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks or question marks). Different formats of direct speech are given as examples with the reporting clause in different positions, including: • The reporting clause before the direct speech • The reporting clause after the direct speech • Two or more sentences of direct speech together • The reporting clause separating one sentence of direct speech • The reporting clause separating two sentences of direct speech A variety of verbs are used in the reporting clauses instead of ‘said’. The worksheets can be completed independently or in pairs. The worksheets are themed around a variety of traditional tales, but knowledge of the stories is not necessary to complete the activities. A set of three expanded noun phrase activities and a noun phrase poster, all linked to Chapter 1 of The Iron Man (also known as The Iron Giant) by Ted Hughes. These resources develop pupils’ understanding of grammar, creative writing skills and engagement with the novel. The following resources are included in the pack: • Noun Phrase Building Activity • Noun Phrase Identifying Handout • Noun Phrase Identifying Handout Answers • Noun Phrase Writing Activity • Noun Phrase Poster Noun Phrase Building Activity In pairs or small groups, pupils build expanded noun phrases using the cards provided. Two versions of the cards are supplied: a colour version, and a more challenging black and white version. Blank cards are supplied for pupils to change or build on the expanded noun phrases they have completed, or to create their own expanded noun phrases as an extension activity. Noun Phrase Identifying Handout Pupils identify the different parts of expanded noun phrases, and find the noun phrases in sentences, with activities getting increasingly more challenging. Example phrases and sentences are taken from Chapter 1 of The Iron Man. An answer sheet is provided for quick and easy marking. Noun Phrase Writing Activity Pupils create their own expanded noun phrases to describe the Iron Man by adding pre- and post-modifiers using the grid provided.
